Hannah Nichols, a spokesperson for Beaufort County’s local government, elaborated on the situation, indicating that the warning comes as rising temperatures are bringing alligators out of brumation, heightening the chances of encounters. “The post was shared as a reminder to help our community stay alert,” Nichols explained to Newsweek.

While alligators are a longstanding part of the Lowcountry landscape, authorities emphasize that while encounters are purportedly rare, the risks can escalate, especially for small animals like dogs. Experts indicate that most alligator attacks on pets occur when animals wander too close to the reptiles’ habitats.

Beaufort County Animal Services has released several precautionary measures for pet owners to help mitigate risks. Recommendations include keeping dogs leashed and under close supervision, particularly during dawn and dusk when alligators are reportedly more active. Additionally, the agency suggests maintaining awareness of the surroundings and familiarizing oneself with local wildlife reports.

Though the odds of being seriously injured in an unprovoked alligator attack are notably low—about one in 3.1 million according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission—there has been a concerning increase in alligator-related fatalities in South Carolina in recent years. Between 2016 and 2022, five such deaths were recorded, which starkly contrasts with the zero fatalities reported in the previous 16 years.
