Authorities in Adams County, Pennsylvania, announced over 250 charges against a couple following a shocking discovery of a neglected menagerie of animals crammed inside a dilapidated bus. Shawn Hirschbine, 51, and his girlfriend, Deanna Huff, 64, faced dire implications after police reported finding dozens of distressed animals in appalling conditions, as detailed in court filings from January 7, 2025.
The troubling situation came to light on June 15 when local officers responded to a traffic complaint concerning a disabled bus on Red Hill Road. Upon arrival, they reportedly encountered Hirschbine and Huff attempting to maneuver the vehicle off the roadway. When inspecting the bus and an attached trailer, authorities described conditions that were “horrific,” with over 30 birds, dogs, and other farm animals in evident distress.
Investigators allege that many of the animals displayed severe signs of neglect, lacking proper food and water, and suffering from various health issues. Disturbingly, some reports indicated that some of the animals exhibited evidence of bestiality, raising further concerns about the couple’s alleged activities. The Adams County SPCA, which later intervened, indicated that certain animals had to be euthanized due to injuries and trauma associated with their dire circumstances.
Officials became increasingly alarmed after revealing details from ongoing investigations into Hirschbine, which reportedly included prior allegations of distributing obscene material to minors in West Virginia. Court documents suggested that he may have engaged in depraved acts involving the animals while charging individuals to witness the misconduct. Volunteers tasked with rescuing the suffering creatures soon found themselves dealing with unforeseen hazards, as some developed scabies after exposure to the filthy environment.
Though Huff was not immediately arrested at the scene, her eventual charges included multiple felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty and illegal possession of firearms. As the investigation unfolded, officials discovered that neither Hirschbine nor Huff fully acknowledged the severity of their situation, with Huff allegedly claiming plans to establish a “petting zoo” for children.
The couple now faces a total of 252 charges, with pending trials expected to delve into the extent of their alleged mistreatment of animals. Hirschbine remains in custody on unrelated charges, while Huff’s whereabouts are currently unknown, prompting authorities to seek assistance from the public in locating her.
In the aftermath of the rescue operation, the Adams County SPCA has worked diligently to rehabilitate and rehome the surviving animals. Several animals have since found loving families, and the organization expressed hope that their harrowing experiences could, at least in part, be written off as a chapter in their lives now concluded. The ongoing case represents a sobering reminder of the need for vigilance regarding animal welfare within communities.
