Long Island Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty After Detectives Allegedly Discover 10 Dead Pets in Unlivable Home

A recent incident in Kings Park, Long Island, has drawn attention after a 42-year-old woman, Cazandra Nucci, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty, among other offenses. According to the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), a search warrant executed on February 8 led to the discovery of what authorities describe as distressing conditions that may suggest severe neglect and mistreatment of animals within Nucci’s residence.

Authorities reportedly encountered an overwhelming stench upon entering the premises, described as a combination of feces, urine, and decomposing material, which allegedly caused personnel to cough and gag. The home’s interior was characterized as hazardous, with what officials referred to as “noxious air” and significant amounts of trash, reportedly piled over six feet high in some areas. This apparent level of debris made it difficult for investigators to navigate, with some reportedly having to crawl over cluttered floors.

Upon further inspection, officials claim to have discovered ten deceased animals, along with numerous others that appeared to be in poor condition, including 11 sugar gliders and nine cats. The causes of death for the animals found deceased have not yet been confirmed, leaving open questions about the overall welfare of the creatures in Nucci’s care.

In addition to the allegations of animal neglect, authorities reportedly uncovered drug paraphernalia within the home, with items allegedly linked to crack cocaine and MDMA. This discovery has prompted speculation about a possible connection between alleged drug use and the conditions in which the animals were found, though no official determination has been made.

Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk SPCA, commented on the case, stating that Nucci “failed to provide a safe and clean environment,” emphasizing that such conditions violate the responsibilities inherent in pet ownership. The SPCA has strongly criticized the reported state of the residence, which the Town of Smithtown’s Code Enforcement has deemed “unfit for human occupancy.”

Following her arrest, Nucci was reportedly booked at the Suffolk County Police Department and later released, with a court appearance currently scheduled for February 28, 2025. She faces charges related to animal cruelty, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In response to this case, all rescued animals are reportedly receiving care and are expected to become available for adoption through the Smithtown Animal Shelter. Animal advocacy organizations have since raised awareness about the importance of vigilance in reporting suspected cases of animal neglect and mistreatment.

This case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by animals in domestic settings and underscores the importance of public intervention in cases where suspected neglect or mistreatment may be occurring. As legal proceedings move forward, many in the community will be closely watching the outcome and what it may mean for future animal welfare protections.
