A Virginia father is being remembered as a hero after he tragically lost his life while attempting to save a dog from oncoming traffic. Jack Leo Burdette Jr., 56, from Woodbridge, reportedly ran into the street to rescue a two-year-old Dalmatian/Pointer mix that had broken free and was running loose during rush hour on the morning of March 7.

According to the Prince William County Police Department, Burdette spotted the dog in danger on Dumfries Road near Old Stage Road and hurried into traffic without hesitation. While he successfully caught the dog and was returning to the safety of the sidewalk, he was reportedly struck by a 2022 Ram ProMaster van. Witnesses and officers on the scene provided immediate aid, but Burdette was later pronounced dead at a hospital due to the severity of his injuries. The dog survived the ordeal and was reportedly treated before being reunited with its owner.

Family members have described Burdette as a “lifelong protector of animals and those he loved.” In a heartfelt message shared on a GoFundMe campaign established to help cover funeral expenses, a relative stated, “Jack’s death impacts so many of us,” emphasizing the profound loss felt by those who knew him. Tributes have begun to flood in, with friends and family recalling his selflessness and dedication to both animals and people alike.

“This is so sad and a true risk for animal rescuers,” one social media advocate lamented, highlighting the dangers faced by individuals who step into traffic to save animals. There appears to be a growing sentiment among advocates that drivers often react recklessly in these situations, possibly contributing to accidents that harm both rescuers and the animals they seek to protect. “Shame on the drivers who show no compassion for animals and people trying to save them,” another individual noted.

The driver of the van that struck Burdette, a 45-year-old man from Woodbridge, reportedly remained at the scene following the incident. As of now, no charges have been filed against him, and police are actively seeking witnesses to provide more context to the events that unfolded that fatal morning.

Burdette’s tragic story has ignited conversations about the risks faced by those who go out of their way to save animals, as well as the responsibilities of drivers in residential areas. A family member stated, “We are raising money for funeral costs to celebrate his life, and appreciate any amount you can donate,” underlining the community’s call to rally around Burdette’s family during this difficult time.

While the dog may have escaped unharmed, the sorrow surrounding Burdette’s death hangs heavily over his loved ones and the broader community. Friends expressed deep condolences, acknowledging the impactful loss of an advocate who selflessly devoted his life to ensuring the safety of both animals and people. One friend remarked, “It’s heartbreaking,” reflecting the collective grief felt for a man who lost his life while trying to make a difference.

Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the tragic incident to come forward, as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Burdette’s death. As the family processes their grief, they remain determined to honor Burdette’s legacy as an animal lover who embodied compassion and bravery.
